This closed door historical romance/thriller is a good fit for readers who enjoy morally gray characters. It asks a lot of questions that don't have easy answers. The action is gritty, in a realistic way, and the mood is dark and heavy with hope in the corner of every scene. It does not stand alone but picks up just where the last book left off. It lacks the banter and joie de vivre of the first book, but those would be wholly inappropriate in the new setting.
Washington's final decision is a terrible one, first because it isn't realistic for the time period and secondly because it doesn't match the skill set of a person with an acerbic tongue who sees the worst in every team member.
The way that one song and dance follow the two lead characters throughout its beautifully sweet.
