REVIEW
cw: mentions of animal deaths, animal cruelty, dementia
Abby's books have always been a one-click for me, and I'm usually invested in her stories within the first couple of pages. Sadly, this one was not for me. I really disliked the repeated references to a character from a viral BookTok series - it felt lazy if I'm honest. The main characters (Xavier and Samantha) really gave off instalove vibes, and the connection between them felt superficial. Perhaps that got better later in the book, but because of one particular line that stopped me in my tracks, I'll never know. And that's okay.
This line made me quit reading immediately.
“Her ex-husband Omar has a sex addiction that she found out about ten years into the marriage. He spent their whole savings on cam girls. She got full custody and he fucked off back to his motherland..."
I'm sorry, but this line was NOT it. Not at any time, but ESPECIALLY right now.
There are SO many others ways this could have been expressed. I was so disappointed to read this from one of my favourite authors. Unfortunately, this was an immediate DNF for me.
Overall Rating: DNF
Heat Rating: DNF
*Thanks to the publisher for an ARC of this book. All opinions are my own*
