Similar to The Road by Cormac McCarthy, The Night Parade is a good, if emotionally taxing, read. If you prefer blood and gore that isn’t just done for shock value (it is still a horror novel) I’d definitely recommend this.
I believe Ellie’s “wonder child” role took away from the overall story. The supernatural element seemed out of place, and the story would be just as impactful without it./spoiler>
