Creating Short Fiction: The Classic Guide to Writing Short Fiction by Damon Knight

I didn't do the exercises so I don't think it's fair to rate this, but this is a solid collection of intro writing advice. If you've read this sort of material before, there's not too much that'll probably be new, but it covers a lot of different things in a clear comprehensive way, and it's written in a very supportive style. Knight gets that different things will work for different people and to figure out what works for you, and the same with most of the rules he espouses. One thing I think he articulates very well is how to work with your subconscious (which he charmingly names Fred)
