Women Don't Owe You Pretty by Florence Given

White Girlboss Feminism

It is a very introductory read, so heads up to anyone who knows the basics of feminist discourse, this book will feel lacking in many areas.

It is however great as a gift for your (White, middle class, thin) younger cousin who just embarks on her feminist journey. Florence states on many occasions that her view is influenced by her privilege so kudos to her for knowing her limitations but still I felt the one-dimensionality of her narration to be showing a slither of what feminism is, and by this omission, inherently misunderstanding it.

It is a girlboss White millennial feminism bible. Take from that what you will but I grated my teeth more often than not. I probably outgrown this book and that shows how important is to go a step beyond and listen to more diverse voices.

The biggest issue that isn’t addressed by the author is that her pov is deeply capitalistic and individualistic. It’s all about you, nothing about community and uplifting each other. If you don’t talk about men with other women then talk about work. You see where I’m getting there?

Overall, not a bad read but please for your own good continue reading past this book, don’t settle here, it’s just brushing the surface.
