No rating & here are my thoughts:
- genuinely such a fucking good idea to mix tonally the vibes of Gladiator/The Hunger Games with some real & intense commentary about the injustice & corruption of the prison justice system & how it disproportionately affects black and brown people.
- genuinely such horrifying subject matter at times and I loved how the author included footnotes
- simultaneously campy and wacky while also super serious & I loved how it played with different elements of punk?? The story of revolution/anarchism/abolitionism in here was so poignant
- I really struggled with the writing style however, & it felt very jarring and honestly kind of all over the place?? The subject matter is so important I think this is absolutely worth the read regardless, but if I’m being real I often found myself very confused following the characters and remembering who was who and what was actually going on apart from like the core story/commentary being told to us
