As a parent what's the most frightening sentence you can hear over the phone?

"If you ever want to see your daughter again, you will do exactly as I say."

Mary Kubica starts this story with a huge moment. Meghan Michaels, ICU nurse, is a divorced mother of one teenage daughter, she’s exhausted, and she’s got a secret. When she gets to work one day she takes over the care of a young woman who has jumped from a bridge, is in a coma, and has a brain injury. When Caitlin’s parents arrive, along with a mysterious stranger, she learns more about this young woman, and details that make everything end in a question mark.

I’m a fan of this author, so far be it from me to take your reading pleasure away from you by stating that the subject of suicide is a rough one. Mary Kubica writes with care both for the parents in the story and the reader so that while the subject is raw, it’s not on the page for long, nor is it treated with disrespect. I appreciated the twist at the ending, I had NO IDEA, and the moments where Meghan’s daughter was at stake were poignant to say the least. A fast read, Andi Arndt, narrator, does an excellent job of creating for you just the right amount of tension as the story unfolds from past to present.
