Under the Oak Tree: Volume 1 (The Comic) by namu, P, Suji Kim

3.75

In this first volume at least, this is a fairly standard take on tropes that are very common in fantasy romance webcomics/manhwa (a duke's daughter abused by her family, forced marriage, and so on). As it happens though, I like those tropes (and read plenty of those types of stories) and I had a good time reading this.

I like both of the main characters, though I wish that they would talk to each other more as they definitely don't really know or understand each other yet. I also really appreciate seeing a main character with a stammer. Most of the secondary characters sadly don't really feel fleshed out yet but I am intrigued by the sorceror.

The art is well done and lovely to see, albeit perhaps not my favourite of the similar webcomics I have read. I do love the cover image, and this hardback edition in general is beautiful - seeing it in the shop originally made me add it to my wishlist before even reading a blurb. I do have a quibble with some of the text formatting - the use of shadows and other features might work on a bright screen but are sometimes hard to read on paper.

I will definitely continue the series, though whether I'll opt for the online version or wait half a year for the next print volume I haven't yet decided.
