The Golem and the Jinni by Helene Wecker

5.0

After I finished this book, I walked around in a daze for days, feeling as as if a hole had been left in my soul where the book had previously been! This is one of those stories that is timeless, though it takes place in 1890s New York and is fascinatingly accurate, yet effortless. The two main characters are mythical representations of two distinct cultures (Jewish and Syrian) that immigrated into New York through Ellis Island at the turn of the 20th century. We discover what these peoples have had to leave behnind, what they bring with them, and how they forge their new mixed identities in this exciting and scary new world. It is a magically enthralling (and educational!) read, with well-spun adventure, mystery, and inspiring truths.
