Nadia Knows Best by Jill Mansell
2.0

This certainly wasn't the best Jill Mansell novel that I have read, and once or twice I almost stopped, but I did push on.

I enjoyed the story of Jay and Nadia and their developing relationship. I liked Nadia, and I really liked Jay. I didn't think that they were really given enough page time, and I felt that their ending was unsatisfactory, I wanted something more - like Jay.
Laurie wasn't a nice character and it was clear from the off that he was not the hero, but I wish Nadia had known the full extent of his dickheadedness.

My rating was lowered because I felt that some of the other plots and characters were just awful. I hated Clare. She was like a parody of a bratty sister, she was an awful person and it was all so exaggerated. I didn't like her, I didn't feel much sympathy with her and I was skimming her chapters and sections towards the end of the book. Were we supposed to support her? If so, she wasn't very well written.

I don't think that the Miriam storyline was required, it was pointless and uninteresting and the page time should have been given to Nadia and Jay and the development of their relationship. It was the main plot after all.

I didn't like the whole Leonie/Tilly plot but I did enjoy the James/Annie plot.

I also had issues with some of the writing and the words used. There were a number of references to 'woofters' and the like which I didn't enjoy. I also hated the mild sexist comments, there was one that I remember where Clare takes the mick out of Jay for letting a girl make his decisions. Is that such a bad thing? Are women not allowed to help men or make decisions for them? Is a real man the one who asks no one for help and makes snap decisions and demands etc?

Overall i can't say that this was the best book that I have ever read, but I did read it and there were some elements that I did enjoy.
