Between The Lines
by T. Gephart
The first part of this story didn’t grab me very much because it was Tessa Ricci complaining about Justin Tibbs and how he was such a manwhore. What she really was complaining about, deep inside, was that she was attracted to him but he didn’t see her and didn’t hit on her. He’s FD and she’s PD and they’ve crossed paths many times before, but he sees her as one of the guys. This night, she’s in Vault, being wingman to her partner Miller. He’s getting over a cheating ex-girlfriend and testing the dating waters again. It wasn’t a surprise to see Tibbs there with his friends, since his sister Presley manages the club.
Tibbs’ meeting with Tessa when she’s all dressed up in clubbing clothes leaves him gobsmacked and determined to pursue this hottie. And here I criticize: Tessa is a fantastic woman but he doesn’t realize it until he sees her all dressed up and fabulous. Anyhow, he starts his pursuit and ends up in her father’s boxing gym, in the ring, boxing with Tessa. And this is when the book got going and the laughs started.
I remember Tibbs as the cocky guy in the other books, the one whose mouth would run spouting nonsense. In this book, he’s almost the same but he’s grown up some. He’s a dedicated fireman, competent and brave in his work. Outside, he’s a man on the prowl of the one-night stand variety. As he gets to know Tessa, all his old habits fly out the window. He’s still cocky but he’s sure of himself, dominant in the bedroom, and very funny. I loved that instead of feeling threatened by a woman cop who is in excellent physical conditions and carries a gun, he relished all her accomplishments and rejoiced at all her talents.
“He was funny and smart, and didn’t back down from a confrontation. The last part was important, especially considering most men found me “difficult” to handle. He didn’t even blink, my “intense” personality not seeming to be a problem for him, which was probably the most attractive thing about him.”
Tessa feared she would never find a man who wouldn’t run, and now she found a man who wouldn’t stop and wouldn’t shut up.
“It was ridiculous how much I loved his smart mouth and enjoyed how cocky he was.”
There are so many funny scenes that I can’t describe to prevent spoilers, but know there is talk of handcuffs. I loved Tibbs’ devotion to Tessa and how he overrode all her doubts. I loved that he made her feel not only successful but also beautiful even when she’s wearing her blues. The seamless integration of their lives and friends and the camaraderie all around was great, and the conflicts included were just perfect to give the story a little angst.
I found that Tessa was perfect for Tibbs, I loved the friendship she had with Miller like siblings, and I loved how her father raised her, a warrior princess. It was a great feel-good story with two wonderful characters.
