Bear Necessities by Dana Marie Bell
4.0
Bear Necessities is the first book in the Halle Shifters series, but this series is a spinoff of another series, the Halle Pumas. I didn't realize I was reading out of order until now, but that explains all of the characters I couldn't keep up with. Alexander 'Bunny' Bunson and his cousin are on a road trip to check on their younger cousin Chloe who is away at college. Once they arrive in the small college town, Bunny runs across an enticing scent that lures him to a local tattoo shop. The owner of the scent is Tabby, the she-wolf with the green bob. Bell had a field day with naming these two. Bunny is a grizzly bear, and Tabby is a wolf. Also shifters in this series know immediately once they have met their mate. Tabby is an outcast, she was sent away from her pack at 15 years old for stealing from the alpha. Of course she wasn't really stealing, but leaving out of the window after visiting the alpha's son. No one stood up for, not even her parents and she roamed in her wolf form for eight years. Only in the last six months has she reentered the human world. Being an outcast makes her a target for the other wolves. Without a pack to protect her she has no rights. Gary enjoys using these rules to his advantage, not only by harassing Tabby and her friends, but threatening to rape her. Tabby doesn't know who to go to, and doesn't want to cause a fuss and lose the first home she has found.
********************************** Spoilers/ Recap *********************************
Tabby & Bunny are mates who fall for one another instantly. Bunny's cousin Ryan realizes his mate is Tabby's human friend Glory. Julian is another bear, but a different kind. His kind is very rare, and have unique powers. He has known for a while that Tabby's other human friend Cyn is his mate, but because he is able to see glimpses of the future, he knows now isn't the right time to tell her. Once he is outed, neither Cyn or Glory are too happy to be mated to shifters. It's kind of like a shifter Friends episode, a large group of friends who are all dating, or in this case, mated to one another. At the end of the book Tabby is accepted into both the local puma, and wolf packs. When different types of shifters mate, their children can take the form of either one of their parents. Once Gary disobeys the local alpha and continues to harass Tabby he is taken into custody. While there they learn that he was sent by another alpha to keep an eye on all of the half breeds. Chloe was attacked and left for dead in an alley. Julian was able to save her, but she stayed in a coma. He agrees to bind them together and use his powers to pull her out of the coma. When she wakes up she doesn't remember what happened, or who attacked her.
