My first time reading Tolkien on my own was a smashing success. I adore the way he endears even the most unsavory characters to his readers, and it is unimaginably impressive the world that he has created… it has captivated millions and even though it’s a fictional realm, it’s so familiar. I found Bilbo so relatable - there is such a strain in me between the desire for comfort and security and the enticing call of adventure.  This story is a reminder to let the Tookish part take over more often than not.  I found the pace of the book very comfortable, jumping from one adventure to the next quick enough to stay entertained but not to quick to feel like you have whiplash. I love how Tolkien incorporates song, lore, and prophesy into his story - and the ending was beautiful. We all have a part to play in the story of the world, and very little of the incredible things we do are with our own strength.
