Roman patricians lived stressful lives like ours, apparently, but they were stressed for different reasons than ours. The arrival in town of an official of higher rank or worse the falling out of favor with Caesar might give a member of the senatorial class a serious case of the collywobbles. In such cases it's evident that not only were their careers and reputations on the line but also their lives and the lives of their families. But Epictetus is there to reassure them by admonishing them to accept their fate. So, this is the Roman version of "stay positive!"
