You Will Know Me by Megan Abbott

3.0

I love Megan Abbott for her ability to delve deep into the dark side of girlhood. However, I felt this ability was lacking in this story. The book goes into the difficulties and the sacrifices that a gymnastics career costs, especially, for the Knox family, whose daughter Devon seems to be a gymnastics prodigy. All the parents want their daughter to be like Devon, and all the girls hate Devon for her talent and ability to capture the attention of everyone. Including the attention of Ryan, a boy who suddenly steals the hearts of all the girls - and mom’s alike. When he dies, their little gymnastics world starts to unravel when no one knows who the culprit is.

I wish that we could have gotten to know Devon better, she is mysterious - and that is as far as it goes. We don’t get to know much from her aside from snippets we get from her mom, Katie. We also get glimpses of other members of her family, like her dad Eric, and her brother Drew. But in general, I felt like I didn’t get to know any of the characters well.

The story kept me pretty intrigued, but I felt the ending fell flat. I wish we could have gotten more from this book.
