Bartleby the Scrivener
by Herman Melville
After finishing Moby Dick I wanted more Melville and this little existential tale of a life fitted the bill perfectly. Moving, thought- provoking, bleak but full of humanity, you can see where novels like Piranesi owe their descent. The themes are similar. Why are we here? What’s life about? Do we have real agency in our lives? What is death?
