I love this book; it clicked with me on another level.  In general, it is humanities as a science fiction novel; gender, religion, politics, society, psychology, history etc.—all are included in some kind of “variation on a theme.”  The writing was very well done, the world building incredibly complex, and the plot unpredictable.  There are so many off-the-wall elements that are bonkers but, somehow,  it all worked for me.

Cons: slow and goes off into strange tangents in an attempt at world building.  The narrative conceit was interesting but didn’t always work, and there were more than a few awkward places.

This book is probably for you if you ever went through a comparative religion phase or if you think statistics are just neat.

This book is probably not for you don’t enjoy the kind of book where you’re halfway through and suddenly realize your understanding of entire plot hinges on the incredibly minor throw away comment on the second page that you forgot about ten seconds after you read it. This is not a specific thing that happens with this book, but the vibes are the same.
