I think this book really completed the trilogy effectively! Annihilation is kind of uncanny enough to stand on its own but the background that Acceptance illustrates the complete story quite well. This was my favorite book in the Southern Reach. I thought it was really emotional and compelling to get into the Director's head posthumously and see her history and the journey of her efforts to reckon with the alien encounter of Area X. She's sincerely a great character. It was also very interesting to see what became of the original Biologist.
