There’s that saying made popular by John Green in The Fault in Our Stars as Hazel Grace states (about her favorite author), “frankly, I’d read his grocery list.” While I always thought that to be true of my love for Markus Zusak’s writing, this book put that love to the test. And I am proud to admit that saying holds true… Mr. Zusak, let’s have a look at that grocery list.

I love this man’s writing. Yes, this story is mostly about his three dogs and how important they are to his life, but it’s also about life itself, about grief, and about perseverance. Zusak managed to make his family and pets the most intriguing cast of characters for this story. I enjoyed every moment of this memoir though I’m afraid it’s only made me hunger for more books from Zusak…time for a reread I guess? Or like I said, I’d take a grocery list!

Well done.
