Kiss of Vengeance
by S. Young
I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
Kiss of Vengeance is the second book in the True Immortality series and it can be read as a standalone, but I recommend reading in order for a much richer understanding of the world building. In this book, we find Rose Kelly who is a fae born on Earth, except she has no clue about her origin or her powers or the supernatural world because someone had put a spell on her as a baby. When 25 year old Rose is attacked by a vampire, the spell is broken. When she discovers her powers for the first time, she finally finds that illusive something that she's been looking for.
Fionn Mor is the oldest being on Earth. During the Iron Age, Fionn was a warrior and a King. But when he made a bargain with the Fae Queen to save humanity, he was reduced to being her slave and plaything. He eventually managed to escape, but not before the Fae Queen turned him into an immortal fae. The gate between the mortal world and the faerie world closed a long time ago, but Fionn wants to reopen it so he can kill the Fae Queen. Vengeance is the only thing that makes his immortality worth it. But in order to reopen the gate, he needs to find one of the few faes who were born on Earth and that's when he comes across Rose. The thing is, Fionn is not the only supernatural being who has a vested interest in the gate. Like Fionn, some want to reopen the gate for their own reason, but there are also others who want to keep it permanently closed.
Fionn teaches Rose about using her powers and at the same time, they are on the run from witches and warlocks and other supernatural beings who want to capture Rose for their own benefit. Fionn and Rose definitely have chemistry and it's the fun kind of chemistry where Rose tries to make the stoic and broody Fionn smile and laugh. Fionn was very brusque and impatient at first, but he gradually softens towards Rose. We get a quarter of a smile, then half of a smile, then a smirk, and then a complete smile and the transition is glorious. Despite all of that, I wasn't entirely sold on the romance for the longest time because Fionn was not 100% honest with Rose. It takes a while for Rose to find out the entire truth about Fionn's motives, but once she discovers the truth, the relationship development becomes a lot more interesting.
It also takes a while for Fionn to realize he no longer needs to live for vengeance, but I really like the development that led him to that realization. And despite his deception and his need for vengeance, Fionn's love for Rose is believable to me. Fionn was so blinded by his vengeance that he didn't even stop to think about the consequences for humanity. I find that kind of hard to believe, but then again, it makes sense because the man was literally only driven by his need for vengeance. Only his mate, Rose, was able to change his mind. Some readers might get annoyed by his thirst for vengeance and I get it. It is annoying. But it also makes sense to be honest. It fits with his character, his personality, and given the abuse he went through at the hands of the Fae Queen...it makes sense. And it makes even more sense that he is only unburdened after meeting his mate, the one person who makes his immortal life worth living.
A note about the reading order:
What I like about how the author organized this series is that the origin of all things supernatural is basically a mystery in book 1 and you're learning and discovering things right along with the hero and heroine. But the origin is explored a lot more deeply in book 2 and you learn about things you wouldn't have otherwise known because the hero himself witnessed everything firsthand during the Iron Age. And that is why I recommend reading in order. It makes sense and it's a lot more fun this way!
P.S. That cover is amazing. The models look exactly like the hero and heroine. I also love that we got to see Thea and Conall during the climax. And OMG I am so excited for Niamh and Kiyo!!!!!
