Between by L.L. Starling

Sorry...but no. There are some good aspects of this novel: the two main characters are quite bright, fun personalities and I grew to like the chemistry between them. The plot and tone are reminiscent of a more adult version of Patricia C. Wreade's novels, like the Enchanted Forest Chronicles: whimsical and a little silly, but with specific rules of how magic operates.

HOWEVER. The absolute amount of unnecessary filler dialogue, rambling conversations, and repetitiveness of certain points was just unbearable. There are pages upon pages upon PAGES that absolutely should have been edited heavily or simply cut out entirely. And I adore long books; my favorite novel is a 900-page high fantasy book, so the length is not the issue. It's that in a book this size, every sentence needs to add something to the story, and that is far from being the case in "Between". Characters have intricately detailed conversations about things or describe situations/events over and over again in ways that add nothing to the plot. There are tangential conversations that meander and joke but are ultimately useless. If this happened once or twice it could be forgiven but the entire book is written like this. I fully had to skim the last 35% or so because I felt like I was reading in circles.

I knew going into this book that it ended on a cliffhanger, but I thought that cliffhanger would at least happen well into the plot. No. By the end, it still feels like things are just getting started, and I felt as if so little had changed from the beginning!

I fully believe that if "Between" was edited down, then more attention given to the REAL plot and not horribly drawn-out side plots where characters wonder if they were given a truth potion or not, then this could be a wonderful book. It's imaginative and clearly written with passion. I hope the readers who loved this enjoy the sequel - I will not be reading any further.
