If I had to describe this book, I would say that it starts as a gothic romance and quickly turns into a thriller. It's a wonderfully written, engaging read. While it does come with heavy content warnings (this book is explicitly about traumatic items), it avoids depicting those events in titillating ways - it's appropriate horrific and something to escape. The ending made me feel complicated, as it still leans back on acceptance of religion as the path to healing . However, this is built up as a theme throughout the book, so it doesn't come as a surprise or fall flat - it's just a theme I don't care for.
Graphic: Adult/minor relationship, Rape, and Trafficking
Moderate: Homophobia and Suicidal thoughts
