hopeful informative inspiring reflective fast-paced

This book is quite different from Elif Shafak’s other works, since it’s not a novel, but a powerful essay. Unlike her richly woven fictional narratives, this is a compact, reflective, and urgent commentary on the world we live in. It’s less about storytelling, and more about truth-telling.

A short but fresh read. Despite its brevity, it leaves a lasting impact. Shafak touches on a range of deeply relevant social issues: the dangers of populism and authoritarianism; the growing digital echo chambers and polarization; the erosion of empathy; the importance of storytelling and nuance in divisive times; the role of collective memory and individual responsibility.

A timely reminder of how to stay grounded, open-minded, and hopeful, even in chaotic times.
