chomskyinthesky 's review for:
Černobylio malda
by Svetlana Alexiévich
This is my first review and it goes to show just how much I loved this book. It is a tough read at times, I had to stop and read something else because it made me quite emotional. The stories of those who were affected by this tragedy were real and raw, and so incredibly moving. The author does an excellent job with the pacing of the book and I thought the book was tied beautiful with the intro and the outro stories.
Having grown up on the Eastern side I thought I knew about Chernobyl and what happened but now I feel that what I knew were really just useless facts. The book is made up of people's memories, mostly a few pages each, and they tell us a story of the life after the disaster from every angle - people who moved away, people who stayed, liquidators, scientists, soldiers and many more. It gives the reader a great insight into what it felt like in the days and years after the disaster. I would highly recommend it but beware this one may leave you very emotional.
