The Dead and the Gone by Susan Beth Pfeffer
5.0
In some ways, this was even more powerful than [b:Life As We Knew It|213753|Life As We Knew It (Last Survivors, #1)|Susan Beth Pfeffer|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1328012816l/213753._SY75_.jpg|206925].
I loved the characters in this one. In a lot of ways, [b:The Dead and the Gone|2169506|The Dead and the Gone (Last Survivors, #2)|Susan Beth Pfeffer|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1266309782l/2169506._SY75_.jpg|1785549] was way more about coming together than [b:Life As We Knew It|213753|Life As We Knew It (Last Survivors, #1)|Susan Beth Pfeffer|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1328012816l/213753._SY75_.jpg|206925]. I liked the way the characters made it through trying times by relying on each other.
I thought I knew what to expect from [b:Life As We Knew It|213753|Life As We Knew It (Last Survivors, #1)|Susan Beth Pfeffer|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1328012816l/213753._SY75_.jpg|206925], but there were so many twists and turns that kept this one going.
I loved the religious aspect in contrast to [b:Life As We Knew It|213753|Life As We Knew It (Last Survivors, #1)|Susan Beth Pfeffer|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1328012816l/213753._SY75_.jpg|206925] too. As a nonreligious person, it can be hard to remember that religion gets people through trying times. The first book presented the negative side of this, and the insistence that death and these incidents was god's will. For whatever reason, this contrasted that with a deeply religious character and an environment that supported him.
I liked the urban setting to this as compared to [b:Life As We Knew It|213753|Life As We Knew It (Last Survivors, #1)|Susan Beth Pfeffer|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1328012816l/213753._SY75_.jpg|206925] as well. It feels a lot more hopeful when people still exist in the world. It does make you think, though. Why do we put so much importance on an island that's likely to be one of the first victims of climate change?
I NEED to read the third book ASAP.
