King of Envy by Ana Huang

Take this with a grain of salt, but this is my review as someone who has become quite picky with their contemporary romance book.

First, the fake marriage plot actually makes the story awkward, and it could have been avoided entirely if it hadn't been included in the first place. It seems like it’s there simply to prevent the storyline from looking too similar to Twisted Lies. The resolution of the fake marriage is also pretty meh tbh. It annoyed me a little because it could have been filled with a more entertaining plot, or cut out altogether to keep it shorter. A short yet satisfying contemporary romance is really a lost art.

And then, the attempt on the ‘dark’ side of the story was BAD; it leaves the story feeling unsatisfying and frustrating. I get that this book leans more toward contemporary romance rather than dark romance, but still. I can also already see how the climax might go. On top of all that, some parts of the storyline definitely feel identical to Twisted Lies.

Lastly, before ending the rant, I just want to point this out: the ‘I fuck my fiancée's best friend while he’s lying unconscious in the hospital’ plot is lowkey giving cheating too (both characters also said that they have mixed emotions), even with the engagement being a sham. I just want to put it out there for anyone who is not into that.

The only silver lining of this book is that it was entertaining enough to end my reading slump. And the fact that I did not DNF’d it.
