Review: The third time was in fact the charm
I have attempted to read this book AT LEAST three times before now, and probably more than that. I've attempted all the different fan translations and given up because they're bad and awkward. I tried this official translation about a year ago and gave up about 75% through it because the stuff with Banyue was just confusing and hard to understand. I decided to give this series one final try and I have 4 out of the 8 books sitting on my table right now. This was the moment, do I finally set this one down for good, or do I keep going?
It just so happened I couldn't sleep last night and in the quiet of a thunderstorm and nothing else to do at 3AM I was able to give this one the focus it needs to actually understand it and found that it's actually better than I remember. The admittedly bloated cast is charming, but just like with this author's other books, nobody else really matters except the main two. However, there is some plot here, even though they spend much of this first book walking around from place to place.
There's a LOT of charm and foreshadowing that you just don't catch on the first read through, and it's actually better on a reread than it was the first time. The first time, I barely understood what was happening at any given time, but now I can at least somewhat piece things together. There's some sweet, quiet romantic moments between the two male leads that are really charming and quaint, but you'd have to have awareness of what happens later on for it to make any sense.
I HIGHLY recommend you watch the manhwa first before you read the book because it makes so much more sense now. I had this same problem with Untamed/Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation. The translations are just really bad I think, whether it's the official ones or the the fan translations.
By the way this book just ends because the actual story is like 3500 pages or something and they had to cut this one off somewhere. It doesn't cut at a good place, but this book doesn't really have cliffhanger chapters the way we are used to in English language books. It just stops and moves to the next chapter in the same breath. It's a little jarring so if you're attempting this one you may want book 2 at your elbows before you start this one.
