A Lady for a Duke
by Alexis Hall
I've been WAITING for the one. A duke dies on the battlefield ..or so they think, allowing Viola to live her true life. She reconnects with her old friend and it's so much more than the friendship they had. Normally, I am so hesitant about queer historical romances. As a lover of all queer romance' and regency romance, I worry that authors cannot mix respectful queer rep with interesting historical setting, but Alexis Hall has done it!!! I loved the characters, their interactions and how everything is woven together.
The trans rep here is delightful because of how unapologetically herself Viola is and how respectful her people are of her! I love how their past relationship is mentioned and remembered fondly, but Gracewood and Viola form a path all their own.One thing to note: Gracewood is kind of sucky and accidentally transphobic in a self-centered way at first, but he learns and changes. I love that Viola doesn't have to keep coming out because she has such amazing ride or die family. She is wonderful. This is so wonderful. The intmacy in this book is refreshing and unexpected, and I will let you read to see what that means!
About half way through this book, I remembered how regency's often have seequals...and I am tady for the sapphic sequel about his sister!! There are so many queer side characters and all kinds of spinoff potential. I hope the author will do so!!!
My one negative thought is that this felt a little too long. There was just a LOT that happened! But honestly, I loved it anyways. I was giggling and smiling and outraged throughout. It was a fabulous reading experience. I read this on audiobook and have to say that the narrator is truly excellent. I am going to listen to MANY more they read!!
