Wow. Just Wow. Emily Austin’s writing feels like she has peered into my soul. She is a master at capturing complex emotions in character driven stories. She seamlessly weaves together so many relatable topics about the stress, anxiety, and fear that young people face in today’s world.
We Could Be Rats is a story about wanting to cling to your inner child while becoming an adult, processing childhood trauma, sisterhood & friendship, and young people trying to find meaning in a difficult world.
I really enjoyed the structure of this novel. There were some twists I didn’t see coming and they gripped me.
I was especially floored that Austin mentioned in the acknowledgements that she listened to Noah Kahan’s Stick Season album while writing this. While reading the book I actually thought her commentary on small town America reminded me of Noah Kahan’s songwriting.
This one will stay with me for a while. No notes.
