Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi
4.0
A naughty little puppet boy made of wood by a father with a big heart, learning how to be a good boy. This Sara Fanelli illustrated edition of a well loved children’s book gives quirkiness and originality to the story of Pinocchio.
It’s such a wonderful story, packed with fun, humour and the ridiculous…but with morals and life lessons, as all good children’s stories are.
This story is utterly timeless, there was even a particularly poignant section where Pinocchio refuses his medicine, reflecting that children are often more scared of the medicine than the disease with the Blue Faith responding with ‘Well, that’s very silly, because the right medicine, taken in time, can save your life’.
I must admit though I’d forgotten quite how irritating and arrogant Pinocchio could be, and quite how repetitive some of the learnings could be which did give me a few more eye roll moments than I’d remembered.
I did adore the vividly imagined illustrated take on the familiar characters of Gepetto, the Cricket, the Blue Fairy, the Puppet Master, the Fox and the Cat. Fanelli has a scrap-book, mixed-medium style to her art, which matched the book perfectly. I bought this book second hand, and the previous owner kindly including a newspaper cutting on Fanelli’s experimental technique which I loved reading.
This is a stunning edition of this book, so beautifully packaged and it was an absolute find!
