People playing houses.
This is the how and why last century gender roles and ideals still impact us. This is also how to get me gasping through every plot turn. Characters do not need to be likable to be true and understandable. I understand Alice, I have been there, made those choices, played those houses. I understand Nelly. Our grandmas lived her fate, through and through. I want a world where sexual predators do not have the audacity to sue their victims. Where girls do not have to stay in terrible, violent marriages, where men do not feel obliged to provide funds for a life their partner does not even want. And it will be a great day when "I do not want kids" or "I do not want this stress-free life" becomes a less scary thing to say.
