Furthermore
by Tahereh Mafi
★★★★☆
“The simple truth was that Alice would always be different — but to be different was to be extraordinary, and to be extraordinary was an adventure.”
Reading this book just made me realize that this story is literally me in book form. It's my kind of nonsense, the kind that most don't understand, the kind that most think too fantastical. But for me, this nonsense is just right, to the point where it making no sense makes all the sense in the world. You just accept what you can't even though it makes no sense, and that's what makes you understand it all the more. And even saying that is probably enough to help you understand what I mean when I say it's my kind of nonsense.
As I'm sure you've heard if you know anything about this book, this is a dark middle grade story, and they weren't kidding. Alice travels with Oliver to help find her father in the world of Furthermore where magic is chaos and people wish to devour it. Where you mustn't sleep without dreams, where the exit is down but only every 5 villages, where the day changes clothes, and the sun likes to nap, and above all, where the world is hell bound on trying to eat you.
I loved the narrator, and the voice it took, the dangerous adventure, the language, and the characters. Such a "not exactly sweet but what other word is there to describe this besides maybe magical" story.
