The Samurai
by Shūsaku Endō
This is among the most beautiful books I’ve ever read. Christ is not a bureaucrat, but the faithful companion who understands. Endo is a master of grief and causes readers to feel the true weight that life’s sorrow brings. He’s a master who occupies what I think is probably the most interesting cultural, religious, and literary intersection among the great novelists.
