The Red Palace
by June Hur
4.5 ѓ?ђ‹?Џ
The Red Palace is a murder mystery that is loosely based on Crown Prince Jangheon (aka Crown Prince Sado). It follows Hyeon, a palace nurse, as she tries to prove the innocence of her beloved teacher, all while navigating court politics and trying to gain the approval of her father.
I found this novel to be extremely engaging. Itѓ??s a little fast-paced, but I think this adds to the growing tension that Hyeon felt as more evidence came to light. Hur did a great job of teasing the culprit without making them too obvious. I actually gasped once I put two and two together, which was around the same time that Hyeon and Eojin realized the truth. Hyeon was a great protagonist and I found myself relating to her throughout the story, especially when it came to her mother.
I liked the complexity of Hyeonѓ??s relationship with her mother. It was a subplot that I didnѓ??t think I would enjoy so much, but it ended up bumping my rating up to a 4.5. I think the relationships were all written well, even if they were barely there.
Korean manhwa enthusiasts would love this novel. It has the right amount of political intrigue and slow burn romance that is very similar to some manhwas that Iѓ??ve enjoyed in the past. Definitely worth the read!
