Moby Dick by Herman Melville
5.0

I listened to the free Librivox audio book version of this by Stuart Wills (https://librivox.org/moby-dick-by-herman-melville). It's 24.6 hours long, and I listened to it on a long road trip. As for the audio book recording review: I enjoyed it for the most part and I can't complain too much when it's free. I appreciate Wills' professionalism and efforts to keep the flow of the book going well while also letting us know which character is talking. Unfortunately, I found Stubs' and Pip's voices to be extremely irritating. It wouldn't be so bad, but Stubs has a lot of monologues, which make those parts of the recordings almost unbearable.

For the book itself, excellent! I very much understand why it is a classic. The themes throughout about fate and epistemology are entertaining and enlightening. The foreshadowing is superb, the characters enjoyable, and the humor well balanced. I really liked how extensive Melville's research was into whaling, and how he shares that knowledge with us.

It's an extremely long and extensive book, but well worth the read. Queequeg is probably one of my favorite characters ever. I will definitely read this book again in the next decade or so, purely for pleasure.
