Song of the Six Realms by Judy I. Lin
3.0

I don’t think the author really succeeded in making us care about the celestial realm, or make the escaped ravagers seem like a crisis for the mortal realm, and therefore feel any stakes in the problems of the realms. Also, I really liked the realm divisions and ideas, but all the magic was so vague and convenient for the story when it needed to be, that I never really felt invested in that. If boundaries and terms of magic had been defined, then I would have been more interested, but since basically any celestial could whip out a new fancy power based on what the plot required, it was just a little boring.

I also felt that we lost our protagonist and her personality a bit in the second half in favor of the quickly moving plot, so that entire half really fell flat for me.
