Unconquerable Sun by Kate Elliott

An entertaining space opera that starts slow-ish and then kicks up a gear after about every 20% of the book. The cast of characters is interesting, with Alika in particular bringing a fairly novel concept to the table. However, it has to be said that most of the protagonist's companions are sort-of one trick ponies in that they excel at one thing, with that one thing then being most of their personality. None of them is boring though, which speaks to the strength of their interactions.

It's a bit strange for an author to perform the 'I'll kill of a nice, innocent character early on to show that I'm serious'-thing with a character who the reader is told is well-liked by their peers, but who only gets in about two lines of actual dialogue before being offed. That way, neither the reader nor the protagonist(s) are in too much grief while serious and threatening things are happening.
