The Martian by Andy Weir

5.0

I’ve been writing really long reviews but my long review of this novel got deleted so here I go with a shorter one. At 3am. Let’s go.

A lot of people have issues with the writing style. I loved it. I don’t know, all the scientific details and straightforwardness? Amazing, incredible, showstopping. I normally don’t like changes in perspectives but I think it worked really well this time.

Watney is so damned funny I love him. Kinda feel bad that he’s using humour to cope so when he makes jokes (“I get to fly around like Iron Man”) you know he’s used to coming up with insane ideas and joking around rather than worrying if they’ll work. I like how even though it’s a survival story where he most definitely should’ve gone insane, it doesn’t get too dark like it’s relatively lighthearted. Makes it unrealistic sure but it’s about a guy on Mars and maybe that lightheartedness is something I need during these times.

Love how this brilliant mechanical engineer/botanist makes stupid mistakes quite a bit. Like yeah that’s exactly how it goes, you can survive on Mars but you forget to account for oxygen you breathe during a flammable experiment.

The scene of the airlock breaking/Hab exploding is so good.

Love the interactions between Watney and NASA. I keep wondering how I would feel in NASA’s shoes.

Teddy is an idiot.

Mars!!!! Mars!!!!! Road trip on Mars!!!! Survival mission on Mars!!!!!! Some hidden astronomy nerd within me really came out during this book!!!!!!!

Feel so bad for the crew. But they’re fun.

Book really kept me on the edge of my seat for a bit.

Also after reading the book and watching the movie I can determine: The movie’s pretty good. Not perfect but enjoyable.

Need to read more science fiction.
