I really enjoyed Burned. Is it the best book in the series, no, but it’s not the worst either – that would be Iced for me. And, I think this is one of the reasons for the many love it or hate reviews. If you like Iced, then this book is probably a letdown because Dani is not the primary character. But, Dani does grow in this book and that is important for the series to continue. Dani could not stay 14 for several more books without completely alienating a good portion of the fan base. Some of you may call it a cop out and/or conforming but I like to think of it as reality for a successful book. Dani was going to have to grow up eventually and I’m glad she got it done in this book and I feel the next book will expand on who she is and/or will be. I honestly can’t imagine being able to live through 2 or 3 more books of “dudes” and “the Mega” is awesomer of awesome blah, blah, blah. Her growing up worked for me and I’m looking forward to her development in the next books.
I feel this book is kind of a filler book and setting up for the final books. This is not unusual for this series. All of the first 4 books had lots of dialogue and information that didn’t get played out until book 5 and this book is following that progression from what I can tell but it was not quite as all-consuming for me as the first 5 books.
I’m really looking forward to the next book and hope the October (or sooner) is the true release date.
My issues with the book.
Lots of different POV did get confusing at times. Also, some of the writing was hard to follow. I had to re-read sections or pages several times to figure out what was happening. This isn’t necessarily new because KMM has done this in other books but I did find myself confused more often in Burned. I think KMM wants to keep you kind of guessing where things are going and sometimes it just ends of being too complex.
Some possible light spoilers ahead
Mac – yes, she is whiny and unsure of herself but I actually think that makes sense. In the first 5 books, she had to just suck up what was going and deal with it the best she could but when it was over, she is conflicted an unsure of who she is anymore. But it isn’t really over because she has to come to terms with being the carrier of the Sinsar Dubh. I’ve seen some reviews where they feel Mac should be done but I can’t see how you can just remove her from the plot line. She is still very important to the series. I can’t believe that at some time her and Cruce aren’t going face off. Maybe I’m crazy and wrong.
Mac/Barons – They have never had a traditional relationship and I am baffled that some readers seem to think that all of sudden they will have a white picket fence and such. I didn’t feel the tension later on in the book was warranted but I think we can all relate to being irrationally angry at people when we feel our life is out of control. Making mountains out of molehills is probably fairly common in most relationships.
