The Midnight Bargain
by C.L. Polk
I absolutely adored this book.
Historical fiction meets fantasy meets romance meets destroying the patriarchy?? Absolutely yes.
Beatrice is a young sorceress who’s told destiny is to marry and save her family from their debts. However, you guessed it, she does not want to follow the path laid out for her.
This patriarchal society does not encourage women to practice magic as men do, so she searches for grimoires and practices magic in secret for years with the hopes of becoming a full Mage, so she can practice her passions without the restriction of the warding collar that will be placed on her at “I Do”. In comes Ianthe, the tall dark and handsome heir to a very sizeable fortune, and his sister, Ysbeta, who wants the same freedom as Beatrice does. Together, Beatrice and Ysbeta must work to perform the great bargain, the last step to becoming a full Mage, but Beatrice is torn between love and her freedom.
The story that follows is full of love and hate and feminism and magic, layered with twists and turns that were beautifully written.
Overall I really loved this book. I thought the character and romance development could have been a bit deeper, but it was still one of my favourites of the year nonetheless! Highly recommend if you like the genres mentioned above
