Deathless
by Catherynne M. Valente
Deathless is an impressive blend of reality and fiction, engaging to start to end-- the language of fairytales blends seamlessly with the gravity of Soviet life here, marrying the old and the new. The protagonist, Marya, is an engaging heroine (for someone whose primary actions in the story center around her relationships, she manages an astonishing degree of agency), but the foremost character is probably the narration, which drips with life as it characterizes the fantastical world she lives in. Honestly one of my favorite magical realism stories, if one can call it that... it lies somewhere in that murky place between genres.
