“One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This” by Omar El Akkad is a beautifully written, challenging and powerful memoir critiquing empire from a journalist. The book explores the author’s personal grappling with politics and the impact of empire, challenging readers to confront their own beliefs and political stances. This book has an underlying sadness and hopefulness as he seems to realize that what the West promises is not freedom for who they deem “others”. I think it resonates because a lot of people are coming to that realization and thinking about a different vision of our world. While he writes about Palestine and the reaction to the genocide, he critiques empire as a whole and the impact it has on people. Some other books I’ve read that I think would pair well with this book is Where Do We Go From Here by MLK Jr., The Message By Ta-Nehisi Coates, & Freedom is a Constant Struggle by Angela Davis. Each of these have impacted my political thinking and viewpoint on the world that I am still grappling with.
