The Cruel Prince
by Holly Black
I was unfortunately super disappointed in this book. It was confusing and didn’t feel well thought out at all. It felt rushed and pointless. I didn’t understand the character dynamics or even some of the plot points.
Spoilers from here on out:
The whole arc of her joining Dain’s spy group felt really unnecessary.
It felt so out of left field to make a big connection from Oak to be related to the crown.
What even was the relationship between Jude and Cardan? He’s barely in the book and when he is, he’s awful.
What is the point of his friends being in the book when they add nothing to anyone’s character growth or the plot? They’re just violent and mean for no reason other than she’s human?
I don’t understand the point of the book and it felt like a waste of time. I didn’t dnf it but I wish I did. Somehow the ending really did some work to make the book a little better but not enough to be worth reading the whole thing. It was confusing and repetitive. The world building didn’t give me much to gather information from. The book certainly throws information at you but without any explanation. I don’t like the toxic relationship between the mc and Cardan even though it’s barely a relationship. He’s awful but it’s supposed to be forgiven because he has trauma. He ripped some kids wings off for kind of being in his way and we’re supposed to look past that? He humiliates the mc for no reason but “cares” enough to make sure she doesn’t get seriously hurt. But why should that matter?
Disappointed with how much hype was around this book. I don’t like the writing style or the characters. I’d give it 1 star but I got through the book regardless of all the cons. I hope other people enjoyed the book, it just really wasn’t for me.
