god. what a perfect book. so poignant and so devastating and so layered and so queer and so wretched. lives were changed!!!!!

i do wish james baldwin would have cut the misogyny, and this rating is extremely generous because i just loved the writing and the queer wretchedness, the depiction of violently queer masculinity, so much. matt bomer narrating the audio also helps. doesn’t excuse baldwin’s hatred of women, though. if he was still alive, i’d slap a 1 star on this book and be done with it.
