A pirate novel full of twists, turns, and stabbing - sometimes in the back. I understand why pirates don't take vacations now. This was an anime beach episode gone wrong, with threats lurking around every corner. Caraway is a very present main character. I often find side and supporting characters taking the center stage, the comic relief a personal favorite of mine. Even though this novel does contain lovable and charming characters, none of them steal the show. This is Caraway's story. I appreciated the complex relationship she had with her brother. It felt realistic for the world and the roles they played in it. There are some fun moments of found family and romance. I loved the character growth we see with Caraway and am looking forward to the sequel.
