The List
by Yomi Adegoke
This all felt so unnecessary. Everything would have been avoided if these grown ass people just learned to communicate.
Ola and Michael are the “it” couple. The epitome of Black Love. Ola is a journalist that would usually jump at the chance to expose a rapist's evil wrongdoings, but when Michael shows up on a list accused of assault…she loses her smarts. Sure, she kicks him out of their home and cuts off communication, but she doesn’t end the relationship because…why?
Michael knows exactly why he is on that list. He knows he fucked up, but he refuses to tell Ola what happened until the very end of the story. Wtf, Michael?! This could have been avoided. Sure, Ola still would have ended the marriage, but at least she wouldn’t have suffered for so damn long.
First of all, I would not have married him in the first place. But I understand that everything was already in motion, tickets already paid for by the family…the moms and aunties all excited…I still would have called it off. I truly don’t understand what Ola was thinking. I have maybe...20% of sympathy for her on her wedding night and what happened. You shouldn't have even been there, girl.
Apart from Ola and Michael, this novel is a critique on social media culture. Everyone is quick to gang up on anyone accused of wrongdoing even if there is no proof. I too am a “I believe the victim first” kind of person, but some of these folks are next level with doxxing and threats. Ola and Michael are who we explore consequences with. Although Michael is the one that has done the deed, it is ultimately Ola who suffers the most. Nothing really happens to Michael other than he loses his job. That’s on brand with how society treats women. The only thing Ola did wrong was appearing to stick by her man.
