A Broken Blade by Melissa Blair

3.0

I have been flopping back and forth between this being a 2.5ish-3 star read. It was a 3-star read for me all the way until the end. In general, I thought it was a fun and entertaining read. You can see where influences come from and it felt very tropey, but I don't really mind that. However, the end really threw me off. I don't really see myself continuing the series, or if I do, it is not a top priority.

Now for the spoilery end part.

The whole Riven and his crew working for the prince thing wasn't necessarily the issue? It was how Keera reacted to being drugged, bound, kidnapped and threatened to join or die. I know they were on a "need to know" basis only, but this felt more than that – it was something very manipulative, which didn't feel good to me. IMO, I think Keera should have called their bluff and said f-it, just kill me. For two reasons mostly. First, I feel like that is more on brand for her. Most importantly though, if she can survive half her face being blown off in an explosion, she can survive a run-of-the-mill stabbing.
