White Ivy

White Ivy by Susie Yang
*****/5
“White Ivy” traces the early adolescence and adulthood of the eponymous heroine, Ivy, a girl with a talent for thievery who’s stuck between two worlds. This book is a slow burn and there were times I sincerely thought about putting it down and not finishing it. However, I finished it and I am very glad for that. All the slow build-up and anticipation throughout the novel paid off in a stunning ending. The ending read like a Greek tragedy, filled with hubris, hamartia, and painful irony. Looking back, all the simple and seemingly unnoteworthy details scattered throughout were really sly pieces falling into place for an ending that left me breathless. The heroine was a mostly unsympathetic character throughout the novel and I couldn’t help but find it fitting that in the end she reaps very dearly what she has sown. If you’re looking for a book with a cleverly-crafted (dare I say perfect?) ending and don’t mind reading 350 pages of slow and careful build-up, this is the book for you.
