Endgame: The Calling by James Frey, Nils Johnson-Shelton
2.0

The Calling, the first in a planned trilogy, is unexpectedly fun. Once I let go of the fact that the writing was not going to be great (I'm not sure there was a complex sentence anywhere in the book!), I ended up enjoying this fast-paced apocalyptic adventure. The Calling begins with meteors hitting several places on Earth, not only marking the beginning of the end of days, but also 'calling' twelve players to begin Endgame. Their purpose is to save their own bloodline and the world by finding three keys (hence, the trilogy).

I'm sure that many want to compare this book and the series to The Hunger Games. But there was very little character development, so it only vaguely reminded me of The Hunger Games. I would compare it to a very fast-paced action movie: heavily plot driven and entertaining, but not much depth or literary writing. I was not interested in completing the book at first, but after Endgame really started (about 50 pages in), I was intrigued and I'm glad I finished. It was fun to 'travel the world' with the players. And even though this is a 460-pager, it's an extremely fast read.

I did not read this for the puzzle/reward aspect of the book, but the puzzles and graphics contained in the book did seem like they would take some time to solve. Also, the cover states that the book is appropriate for ages 14 and up, but there is quite a bit of language, lots of violence and death, and adult situations, so I would say it's more of an "R-rated" book.
