Glow of the Everflame by Penn Cole
2.0

Ok, despite what I’m about to say in this rant, I did kind of enjoy this book and I think I’m still going to continue the series bc I bought it before I started this one lol.

Okay so 1. Diem is absolutely my least favorite FMC, ever. But what’s frustrating, is that I loved her in book 1. I remember seeing people say they couldn’t stand her character and after Spark, I didn’t understand why…. until this book lol.

I’m convinced that the author wanted her to look dumb & embarrassed at every turn. It was beyond frustrating to read. I was almost more annoyed with the fact that the author hardly made her look good. I actually cringed with secondhand embarrassment for her countless times because I was like wtf??? can we write something good in for her??? For example, after the ball, Eleanor saying how amazing Diem did and how much everyone respected her. I was like…did I miss something?? Because everyone at that ball disrespected and embarrassed her every chance they got. And even after the cousins dinner, Eleanor said a similar thing and I found myself wondering what in the hell she was talking about because again, they literally embarrassed her and harassed her over and over and she hardly came out the winner lol.

But even on top of all that, Diem put her loyalty with basically every person who did not deserve it and it drove me insane. I actually had to pause reading for 2 days because I just needed a break from seeing her constantly make stupid, illogical decisions. And the number of times Diem cut people off from speaking when they were trying to tell her something important got so ridiculously old. While I understand this book was likely intended to showcase her character arc, I feel like the author needed to make Diem at least a LITTLE more likeable.

I couldn’t stand that the author made Diem’s godhood power so difficult to conjure the entire storyline. 1. It only added to the embarrassment of her character 2. It was so drawn out. The reason for it finally listening to her was cheesy to me. I can see that she maybe wanted it to be more dramatic being that it was revealed to everyone at the end, but it fell flat with the number of times she looked incompetent in front of nearly every other character.

Luther and Taran’s characters were probably the only good thing about this book. Luther deserved a lot better than what he got from Diem. I was actually shocked at the number of times Diem said the most unkind things to him and didn’t trust him over and over when he did nothing but show his complete loyalty to her. Like WHY did the author do that???? I get making the readers wait for their relationship, but cmon there are just other ways to do it. I also thought maybe the reason Luther wasn’t explaining his loyalty to her is because he realized they were mates before she did. To me, that would’ve been a better explanation for why he so blindly layed his loyalty at her feet. He went along with every single thing she wanted even when they were completely illogical. It got annoying ESPECIALLY because Diem didn’t appreciate that loyalty.

And why Henri’s character stayed so prevalent as a love interest for Diem for THIS long, baffled me. Doing that only made Diem’s judgement look ridiculouslyyyy off. Even in her own thoughts she defended Henri and her love for him.

The epilogue was interesting. Definitely a good cliffhanger to get me interested in reading book 3. But I will say, I’m pissed tf off that no one found a way to tell Diem’s mom that Diem was made queen and may be officially coronated. I guess Luther didn’t know her true plans, but whatever. Her mom’s an idiot too I guess. And also wait- how was Vance, Luther, AND diem’s mother on the island if what’s his name said that no one gets on this island without him knowing??? Not very good at his job obviously.

Okay, I needed to get that off my chest. I’m done ranting for now. Please let Diem be less obnoxious in book 3
